The Route
The motorway under concession to S.A.V. Società Autostrade Valdostane S.p.A. starts at Km 53+192 on the A5, at the Quincinetto junction, at the connection with the motorway from Turin.
It winds along the main valley of the Aosta Valley territory, crossing the course of the River Dora Baltea numerous times and accompanying the natural slopes of the surrounding mountains. After a little more than 47 km it reaches the Aosta motorway barrier, where the route splits into two branches: one leading to the Mont Blanc Tunnel and the Little St Bernard Pass, the other to Aosta, the Tunnel and the Great St Bernard Pass.
The Structure
On the Quincinetto-Aosta section: two lanes plus one emergency lane in each direction.
On the Aosta-Aosta Ovest/Saint-Pierre section: two lanes with frequent lay-bys along the route.
On the Raccordo A5-S.S. 27 G. S. Bernardo: single carriageway with two lanes on the A5-S.S. 27 and one lane on the S.S. 27-A5, with frequent lay-bys.
Junctions
Along the motorway, in addition to the Aosta/Gran San Bernardo and Aosta/Monte Bianco barriers (terminals of the Italian interconnected motorway network) the junctions listed below allow connections with ordinary roads and the main tourist resorts:
- Quincinetto junction: Ivrea and Canavese Valleys;
- Pont-Saint-Martin junction: Gressoney and Champorcher valleys;
- Verrès junction: Ayas Valley;
- Châtillon/Saint-Vincent junction: Valtournenche;
- Nus junction: Saint-Barthélemy valley;
- Aosta junctions: Aosta and the Gran San Bernardo valley;
- Aosta Est Nord junction (997) allows northbound motorway connection between Aosta and Courmayeur;
- Aosta Est Sud junction (998) allows southbound motorway connection between Courmayeur and Aosta.
